Sarah graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2001. This was followed by an internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, under Dr Sue Dyson, one of the world experts in sports horse lameness. After a period in general equine practice in the UK, Sarah to Australia where she completed a second internship at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital, enjoying this so much that she stayed on at the clinic for a further seven years, firstly in an ambulatory and stud role, then followed by a surgical residency under Dr Jim Vasey. During this time she published on several topics in the veterinary literature. Sarah passed her Fellowship exams in Equine Surgery in 2011, and came to work in Bendigo a few months later. Her main interests are all things surgical and lameness.


Dr Simon Robinson

Registered Specialist in Equine Reproduction

Simon has been involved in equine breeding and stud practice for many years.  He is originally from Sydney, but after qualifying as a veterinarian, Simon spent 6 years working as an ambulatory and stud veterinarian at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Shepparton.  Prior to his veterinary career Simon managed one of the largest equine studs in the Southern Hemisphere.

He has a vast amount of experience in equine reproduction and is a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists (a specialist qualification in veterinary reproduction, and one of only two in Victoria).  Simon’s veterinary interests extend to equine internal medicine and he is a Member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (Equine Medicine)

Simon also breeds and races Standardbred horses and owns a highly successful show pony

Dr Michael Whiteford

Michael Whiteford

Mike originates from Scotland and graduated from Glasgow University in 2007. He started off working in mixed practice in Northern Ireland, before deciding to switch to a dedicated equine only career pathway. This resulted in a move to Australia to complete an internship at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Shepparton, honing his skills in all aspects of equine work. Mike came to work in Bendigo after this, alongside Dr John Brown. He has been in Bendigo for over three years, enjoying the area, clients and work so much that he seems here to stay. Mikes principal areas in veterinary medicine are racetrack work (especially respiratory medicine), lameness and stud work.

Dr Tom Russell

Tom Russell  

Australian and European Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery

Tom is a 1993 graduate of Glasgow University. He began his career as an intern in Large Animal medicine at Glasgow University, followed by two years in private practice. From 1997-1999 he was fortunate enough to be trained in Equine Surgery at Melbourne University by legendary equine surgeon Dr Alistair Maclean. He then worked in private practice in Caulfield racecourse, the Middle East, and Macau, before moving to Dublin University to begin formal training for specialist status. He finished this training at Sydney University, and became a Diplomateof the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2006.

He was the Senior Surgeon at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital for eight years, before moving to Bendigo in early 2014.

He has numerous publications in the veterinary literature, including several novel surgical techniques. He is a frequent speaker at veterinaryconferences, and in 2013 was invited to present four lectures at the international British Equine Veterinary AssociationCongress in England.

In his spare time he likes to play metal guitar, and has found that enthusiasm and volume are a more than adequate replacement for talent.

Dr Laura Nath

Registered Specialist in EquineMedicine

Laura is our consultant for internal medicine cases. Laura graduated from the University of Sydney in 2003. Following graduation, Laura completed an internship and remained at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital as an assistant to Dr Angus McKinnon for several years, gaining a certificate in Equine Stud Medicine from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK in 2007. Laura worked for a period of time in the UK, then returned to Australia to complete a residency in Equine Medicine with Dr Kate Savage and Dr Sally Church at the University of Melbourne. Through this she gained a masters degree after researching cardiac disease and gained Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in equine medicine in 2010. Laura has also worked in racetrack practice at Flemington Equine Clinic and at Rossdales and Partners in Newmarket, England.

Karen Patterson - Practice/Business Manager

Karen joined the practice in May 2015 in the role of Practice/Business Manager.  Working with partners, staff and clients, Karen oversees the financial management and practice operations to achieve business results in line with organisational goals and strategic direction.  Karen brings business management skills gained over more than 20 years in international business to the practice.

Brent Jane - Billing

Brent joined the practice in February 2018 in the role of Billing Officer and is responsible for client billing across all areas of the business. Brent has a comprehensive background in customer service and is always ready to assist with any enquiry you may have in relation to your invoice .

Bridgett Williams

Bridgett Williams - Receptionist

Bridgett joined the practice mid 2015 in the role of Receptionist and is most often the cheerful voice you will hear when you phone the clinic.  Bridgett is your first point of contact, both by phone and in person, taking all of our bookings and managing our busy front desk.  Bridgett has a genuine commitment to providing  excellent service, and has quickly become a favourite among clients and staff.

Cathy Smith

Cathy Smith - Accounts Receivable

Cathy joined the practice mid 2016, her primary role being accounts receivable. Cathy is always happy to assist with enquiries regarding your account.  Cathy also looks after the administration of contracts in the stud season. She has many years of  experience across all aspects of office administration and is a valued member our team.

Clare Wheatley  AVN - Head Equine Nurse

Clare is one of the original start-up team here at the hospital, and has many years of nursing experience.    Clare, an Accredited Veterinary Nurse (AVN),  is a key member of the team as anyone who frequents the Bendigo Equine Hospital will know.  Clare is a graduate of the Marcus Oldham College with a passion for eventing.  Clare holds a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, Certificate III Equine Nursing, a Diploma of Horse Business Management, and a Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (Surgical).

Clare gives much to the equine community, through her dedicated nursing work, and her ongoing management of the nursing student placement program here at the hospital.  

Kylie Ducrotoy

Kylie Ducrotoy -  Equine Nurse

With a Certificate II in Equine Industry, Kylie joined the practice in 2014 as part of the stable team.  Within a short time, Kylie enrolled in the Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing course and joined our team in the role of student equine nurse. Now qualified, Kylie is employed full time in the hospital and continues to extend her practical knowledge.


Jessie Milsom - Student Equine Nurse

Jessie joined the practice in August 2017 in the role of stable attendant. Jessie has recently moved to our nursing team in the role of student nurse, and will complete her Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing.  Jessie works full-time at the hospital and continues her studies after hours.

Jaymie Young - Stable Attendant

Jaymie joined the practice mid 2018 in the full time role of stable hand.  Jaymie holds a Certificate II in Equine Industry and has gained good practical skills through maintaining her own horses, and her past employment in the Bendigo horse community.


Shannon Stone

Shannon joined the practice in early 2016.  Currently studying Certificate III in Performance Horse at GOTAFE, Shannon is a valuable addition to the team.  The Stone family are local breeders of Warmbloods for dressage, and Shannon regularly competes in the Equestrian Australia Dressage competition.
